Information from the artist:
Daniel was a member of the Kindergarten in the village where I volunteered, Karunga (Kenya). He used to come to our house everyday to play. Unfortunately, about three weeks into the project he got displaced to Ndodori, and we didn’t see him again. I often wonder how he is getting on.
During the time when I was painting this, the outbreak of violence due to the elections (27th December 2007) occurred. This very much affected how I approached the painting. Originally, I started the piece with a view of creating a young, inquisitive child. However, I think there is now a sadness in the piece, which somewhat reflects the concerns I had for my village where I volunteered.
